One of the most important aspects of any home security system is the use of security cameras. However, they can be completely useless if they are not mounted in the right places. For instance, if the burglar never sees the cameras, they cannot serve as a deterrent, which is one of the main goals of surveillance equipment. Another reason why placement is so essential is that they need to be mounted in areas that are primed for break-ins. Placing a camera over the front door might serve as a deterrent, but it is unlikely that a criminal will use the front door unless it’s the only viable option.
To ensure that your security cameras are placed properly around your property, you need to ask yourself a few questions before you install them.
• Why are you getting security cameras?
• Does the security camera need to be hidden?
• Does the security camera need to be operational both in the daytime and the nighttime?
• How large of an area do you need to watch?
To determine where you need to place your security cameras, make a list of the vulnerabilities around your property. For instance, you might want a camera over the front door as a deterrent, one over the back entrance to record possible break-in attempts, one over the side windows and one over your garage door. Usually, you will need to install more than one security camera as part of a comprehensive home security system because most properties have more than one break-in risk.
If you need to have a camera hidden for any reason, such as with a nanny cam, scout out areas that will still look normal even if a camera is there. You obviously do not want the camera detected in this instance, so it needs to be hidden well. If you need your cameras to work in both the day and the night, you will need to purchase cameras that include infrared night vision in order to get better quality recordings. You will need to spend a little more for these cameras, but if you don’t, you might as well not even have cameras there.
Be sure not to mount your cameras too high off the ground because you will compromise the quality of the recording. You want to be able to see the face of the burglar and if the camera is not positioned properly, the recording will be worthless. Instead, mount several cameras that overlap observation areas so you can minimize the possibility of not getting a good picture of the criminal.
If you include video security cameras in your overall security system, be sure to consider placement of the cameras before you install them. The difference between placing them correctly and not could be the difference between catching the bad guy and having him go free.
