Summertime is the ideal time for moving. The kids are out of school, so they are at a perfect point in the year when they can tie up loose ends with one school and start fresh in another. The temperature is usually warm so you don’t freeze when you are moving your boxes from your house to the truck and back again. The days are longer so you have more light to get things done during the day. However, with the summer comes the rain.
Of course, a little rain is certainly beneficial in the summer. It cools things down and might make the move more pleasant if you would have otherwise had to move in the blistering heat. But, as any mover will tell you, a torrential downpour could make the move a living nightmare.
Light rain showers and sprinkles will never cause a move to be postponed, but if moving day looks like it could be rainy all day with thunder and lightning, it is best to move your date, if at all possible. However, not everyone will be able to reschedule for any number of reasons, including the ability to get off work. For these people, moving in the rain is possible, if not pleasant, but it will take significantly more work.
If you can afford it, ask your moving company to prepare your furniture to be moved in the rain. They know what they are doing and will ensure that it is protected from the elements. Of course, they are going to charge for this service, but it is well worth it if you do not know how to wrap your furniture properly.
To save some money, you can wrap your furniture yourself. Get a heavy-duty tarp in addition to wrapping plastic so you can cover couches, chairs and mattresses. Do not use shrink wrap, though, as it can leak. Wrap everything securely in plastic, making sure that no part is left uncovered. Then put the tarp over all the furniture and tie down.
Getting your furniture from your house to the truck and back again is also a challenge. Try not to let the furniture sit on the wet ground if at all possible. The best suggestion is to create a walkway from your house to the truck out of carpet remnants or flattened cardboard boxes. Ensure that the movers have a clear path from your door to the truck so they are not at risk of slipping. The movers will not remove their shoes when they come into your new house, so be sure your carpet is protected by cardboard, towels, blankets or other barriers.
