One of the easiest ways most burglars know to get into houses is through the windows. Even if you have a top-of-the-line home security system, if you don’t pay attention to your windows, you could still end up being a victim of a burglary. Luckily, you can upgrade your windows’ security with just a little work. You don’t even have to worry about your improvements costing too much, as most fixes are inexpensive.
To begin with, walk around your house and check out every window. Make a list of all your windows, noting the type of window each one is and the locking mechanism each one currently has. Check the frames of each window to ensure they are solid enough to withstand an attack.
In most cases, you will need to remove the existing locks on your windows and replace them with sturdier ones. For instance, if you have double-hung windows, the sash locks that come standard on these are not secure enough. A burglar would be able to slip a knife between the sashes and open the lock. There are specially designed after-market locks for double hung windows that are much better.
If you are lamenting the loss of fresh air because you think that the windows have to be closed to be secure, don’t worry. There are some locks on the market that will allow you to secure a window when it is opened for ventilation. This is a nice compromise to keeping them shut all the time.
Regardless of how you choose to make your windows more secure, be sure that you and your family can get out of them if there is an emergency. Most windows are designed to be pushed out from the inside so that anyone trapped inside can get out quickly. You should also make sure that everyone in the family knows where the keys are to the locks in case they need to open them in an emergency.
If you have installed a security system in your home, you should pay the extra fees to have a sensor put on each window that leads to the outside. Many homeowners believe they can save money in this area, but burglars know this and they will try the windows before they even try the doors in most cases. You do not want to leave any area of your home vulnerable to crime, so be sure to pay attention to your windows as well as your doors.
