How to Save Money During a Move

You have already dropped a small fortune on your new house and you will likely spend a lot more cash on other items related to your purchase. However, now that you have decided to move, a good portion of your money will need to go toward moving expenses. Many people believe that their spending is done after they sign the papers for their new house. Unfortunately, there are many other situations that are going to require money before you can shut the front door to your new house. Luckily, if you plan ahead, you can shave hundreds of dollars off of you moving expenses just by following a few suggestions.

One of the best ways to save some cash during moving is to get your boxes for free. If you buy boxes from a moving company or storage facilities, you could easily drop $100 or even more. Ask your local grocery store or liquor store for their empties or visit an apartment complex the first week of the month to get boxes from people moving in. Instead of buying packing tape from an office supply store or a grocery store, buy it from a hardware store or discount store. You will save as much as $5 per roll.

If you are moving yourself instead of hiring professional moving company, you are already saving a bundle. However, you need to be careful when renting a moving truck because they can pack on the charges without you even realizing it. Get several quotes and ask how they charge for mileage before you sign a contract. You should also inquire about insurance to make sure your belongings are adequately covered. If your homeowners’ policy covers your move, do not buy extra insurance from the truck rental company.

If you have to store your belongings for a time, you will want to carefully look at the policies of your storage facility. If you think there is any possibility that you might not be able to make a payment on time, you could end up losing your belongings to an auction. So, be sure you will be able to meet your obligation before you rent. You should also take care to rent a unit that will properly protect your belongings so you don’t end up having to replace them, which would cost you a fortune. Check out deals that allow you to rent a unit for $1 for the first month when you rent for two months. These deals can save you a ton.

Moving is an expensive proposition and there is no way you can get around spending at least some money during the process. However, if you are diligent, you can save a lot more than you spend by planning ahead and following the advice of movers who have gone before you.
