Business Mastermind Group

By: Harry Piper

Everyone with an entrepreneur's soul loves to talk with other like-minded self-starters. A business master-mind meeting gives you the chance to form close, supportive relationships with a small number of business people and entrepreneurs who want tohelp you, as well as be given your support.

Everybody in the group gets a chanceto solicit help from each other member, in turn. In this way, you help your fellow masterminders and they help you in return. Let's explore what makes a good mastermind meeting and also dispel some current myths about what mastermind groups don't do.

First, a good business master mind is made up of compatible individuals who "fit" together. There should be nobody in the meeting who doesn't logically belong. The make-up of the group is ideally based on a set of criteria that members choose. For example, business size or a particular industry might be the criteria for a group. Alternatively, maybe every member is an actor or in franchises, etc.

Second, the group needs a clear purpose. A good example might be to help every member to enjoy a lucrative and increasing firm. Or it may be to help each member to increase twofold their business every year.

Third, your group will have to set down rules. These should involve subjects such as presence, involvement, responsibility, having only a single topic of discussion at the meeting, providing encouragement for other members, etc. In the absence of rules, you will find that some members will be a little too laissez-faire with their behaviour, turning up only when it suits them, or not get involvedwhen the conversation moves away from their question.

fourthly, accountability is key. Nobody like the prospect of public embarrassment, and that's precisely what answering to the mastermind group will be, if you fail to complete on your actions. The value of public accountability should not be overlooked - if you have to explain failings to a single person, that's uncomfortable. To explain to a meeting of trusted contemporaries that you have "been too busy", or "forgot", will soon make you so self-conscious that you'd rather merely get the task done.

Fifth, openness. If members are not open and disclose what they know with you, it will be a pretty worthless experience. It's the same in reverse, too: you must share what you know with the mastermind group..

If you can create a business mastermind that follows these concepts, you've got a big likelihood of being in a meeting that will challenge and stretch you. Which means your company will develop faster and your own horizons will expand, too.
